How to make your garden a safe space for birds in Winter

During Winter and going into the height of the frosty season after the New Year, our gardens can be pretty sparse and not so attractive to birds if we don’t maintain them. However, birds still need a place to go for food and shelter. Luckily, there are many simple things you can do in your garden this Winter to make it a safe space for birds.

Stay festive

Even though the festive season is over, you still have time to plant some of the holiday’s popular plants that produce berries for birds such as holly, ivy, rowan and honeysuckle. Make sure you do it before it gets too frosty, as the ground is the perfect moisture to get these berries growing.

Allow for a little untidiness

It can be tempting to keep things neat and tidy for appearance purposes, but actually a little mess can be good for birds. It can provide a place to hide and the stems and seed heads that attract insects can provide birds with food. An idea is to keep one area of your garden for this purpose and then the rest of it you can tidy as you please.

Top up your bird feeders

If your garden doesn’t have as many plants for birds to feed on yet, or you’re just at the beginning when it comes to bird feeding, a nice simple way to help birds is to try and keep your bird feeders topped up with bird seed during the Winter. It can also be a good idea to put your bird feeder somewhere quiet and safe, away from pathed areas and ideally near shelter.
