As it’s now time to start packing away your Christmas decorations, you might be reflecting on your handiwork this year and how you might want to do things a little differently next year. Maybe you didn’t have enough Christmas lights, or you feel there was something lacking with your Christmas tree?
You may even be considering making more use of Christmas garland next year. It’s coming back into fashion in a big way, and it can be placed in so many different ways within the home. Here are a few ways to take note of this for Christmas 2023, when the garland is sure to be a hit.
On your banister
The most popular place for Christmas garland is draped down the stairs along the banister. The idea is to make it look natural and full, so a good idea is to intertwine two types together along the banister. Zip ties are a great way to attach these without all the hassle of tape and tack.
You can also add other decorations to the garland such as bows, holly, pinecones, or LED candles at the bottom to really go for a cosy look.
On your stairs
If you happen to have a long banister and wide stairs, your Christmas garland can be draped over both or placed as a small addition at the side of the steps. This can be a good idea if you have curved stairs or stairs that change direction, as the space between the two staircases is perfect for a sprig of Christmas garland.
On your mantelpiece
The mantelpiece is often the focus of the living room, and unless you have other Christmas decorations to place on there, it can look very lacklustre in terms of festivity. Pine Christmas garland is great for draping around the fireplace. This gives a natural look but really makes your mantelpiece part of the festivities.
On door frames
Door frames are also a perfect place for Christmas garland because it makes your whole house become as festive as Santa’s grotto. Feeding lights around the door frames along with the garland really makes the greenery stand out.
Don’t forget your front door either. Let people know you’re in the festive spirit by hanging your garland around your front door frame, complete with a wreath made from the same greenery.
In your porch
If you’re not keen on putting Christmas decorations outside but you have a porch, Christmas garland can be hung in these areas. You can even frame your door from inside your porch so you get the full festive effect.
On picture frames
Instead of taking your picture frames down to be replaced with more festive imagery, why not bring the festivity to them with Christmas garland. You can keep your family pictures up all year round and still decorate the house for Christmas by simply accenting them with a draped piece of garland.
On window frames
Similarly, window frames need not be left out of the festivities. If you don’t want too much garland, pick a feature window to adorn. The kitchen window is a great choice because while you’re cooking your Christmas dinner, a Christmas garland trimming around the edge of the window can give you that cosy Christmas touch.
On your mirror
Just like picture frames and windows, mirrors can be draped with garland to bring them out and make you feel like you and your guests are in a festive movie!
On the dining table
If you found yourself hosting a lot this year but all your dining table had was those old Christmas place mats, think about adding some garland next year. Even if your table isn’t the biggest, you can drape a garland along the length of your table or down the table legs. If you prefer and have the means to do it, hanging garland and lights above your table also has a great festive effect.
In your hallway
If you have a generously sized hallway, you can drape Christmas garland along it, leading through to the living room or kitchen, or feeding into the Christmas garland on the banister if your stairs are off the hallway.
On windowsills
Another great place for Christmas garland if you don’t have a mantelpiece or fireplace is the windowsill. You can drape this in the same way you would around a fireplace, maybe adding LED candles along the length. This creates a beautiful effect that can really make each room more festive.
On your headboard
Another one of the forgotten rooms when decorating is your bedroom. Some people might like it left the way it usually is, but again, Christmas garland is just a nice subtle touch to remind you it’s Christmas and fill your room with the scents of the festive season. If you have a decent sized headboard on your bed, this can be a great place to hang some garland, and some mistletoe if you feel like it!
