How to treat sandy garden soil

One of the most common UK soil types is sandy soil. This is soil that is extremely dry, gritty and rough to look at or touch. There are benefits to having sandy garden soil, but drawbacks too. We will explore both in this blog.

What exactly is sandy soil?

Any good soil will contain sand as one of its minerals, but this will be balanced out by other constituents like clay. Sandy soil is where there is too much sand and very little clay.

One benefit of sandy garden soil is that any water drains quickly and easily, so there is no danger of it flooding and becoming waterlogged. Sandy soil is also quick to warm up after winter.

The problem with sandy soil

Sandy soil can lead to problems – for example, when the water drains from it, so do many of the nutrients that plants need to survive. This can make growing vegetables or flowers in your garden a lot more difficult. Fortunately, you can solve this and grow beautiful blooms to enjoy from your Outback reclining chairs.

How to treat sandy soil

The best way to improve soil of this kind is to add compost or well-rotted manure. Mix between two and four inches of either into the soil to supply the missing organic matter. This will ensure that the soil retains more water and essential nutrients that plants need to grow. Among the elements to put into your manure are clay, grass cuttings and leaf mould.

If your soil is too sandy, follow this guide to fix the situation.
