A guide to rattan garden furniture

With its clean, stylish lines and unsurpassed comfort, rattan garden furniture is the ultimate in outdoor living. In this blog, we will provide a brief guide to its history, manufacturing and how to look after it.

History of rattan furniture

Rattan is mostly found in Southeast Asia, within the region’s tropical forests. While many people believe rattan to be a type of bamboo, it is in fact a material that comes from climbing palm trees. It is neither wood nor bamboo, but it combines strength with flexibility, which makes it perfect for weaving.

Rattan first arrived in Britain thanks to the Empire and furniture made from it was adopted by the Victorians. With the exception of a brief early 20th century decline, it has remained popular ever since. Enthusiasm grew even more when synthetic rattan was created, as this is more durable and weather resistant.

How is rattan garden furniture made?

These days, rattan furniture is almost entirely made from the synthetic version, which is created from resin or polyethylene. Strips of it are produced in various lengths, widths, textures and shades. They are then woven around frames wicker-style and stapled in place. The frames are usually made of aluminium.

How to look after rattan furniture

Although synthetic rattan is durable, it can eventually fade in the sun or develop mould due to rain. You should wash it with soapy water and a brush and then either keep it inside when not in use, or buy Garland garden furniture covers for it.

Rattan garden furniture looks great and is a low maintenance choice.
