If you have a BBQ, the chances are that you look for every opportunity to get grilling – particularly in summer. There are some foods that you should never put on the grill though, and in this blog, we will list a few to avoid.
Green vegetables
It can be tempting to put greens on the grill, because of the prospect of adding some smoky flavouring. You should resist that temptation though, as the results will invariably be disappointing. The delicate green leaves of everything from lettuce to spinach will burn as soon as you put them on. Tougher greens like kale will tend to char on the outside and stay raw inside.
Soft cheeses
Putting soft cheese such as Camembert or Brie directly onto your grill will lead to a sticky mess. They have a lot of fat and moisture in them, which makes them melt very quickly. This will then drip through the grates in your grill – and will be very hard to remove when it dries. If you want to be able to relax on your rattan garden furniture post-BBQ, use a dish or some foil.
Thin fish
Some types of fish are fine for the BBQ, but you should avoid grilling thin ones. This means varieties like flounder and tilapia. The reason for this is that they cannot cope with the direct heat. They will stick like glue to the grates and fall apart if you try to flip them.
There are still plenty of great foods you can grill this summer!
