Going on holiday can be a concern if you keep plants.
The issue of how to ensure they get enough water to survive is a real one. You may be able to ask a neighbour to help – you could even let them use your fridge or Outback reclining chairs as an incentive! – but what if that is not an option?
Outdoor plants
When it comes to outdoor plants, the British weather will probably do its bit.
Beyond that, some plants – notably herbaceous ones – are actually pretty capable of surviving a couple of weeks without water. This is because they grow their roots deep into the soil.
Where it will become more of a problem is with vegetables and fruit, as they will turn tough and unappetising if they are not watered. If it is not possible to ask a neighbour, make sure to really douse them thoroughly and add bark and wet newspaper mulch to the soil.
Indoor plants
For short breaks, it will be fine to leave these as long as they are in a place with plenty of shade, and have been watered well first. If you are going to be away for more than a couple of days, you might want to consider drip water systems.
Another option is to put your plants in the sink and bathe them with a towel beneath them, then leave the tap turned slightly on.
We hope these tips help your plants stay well hydrated as we enter the summer months!
