We usually think of trees as immovable, slow-growing and tall, but there are considerable advantages to growing smaller specimens in pots.
If you’re renting, you can take your tree with you if you move. If you’re still formulating a garden plan you can relocate your tree to a more appropriate spot once your design is fully realised.
Here are three great trees to try this with:
1. Japanese maple
The Acer Palmatum, or Japanese maple, is an absolute winner in terms of colour, shape and longevity. These beautiful trees have intensely deep red or orange leaves, a delicate leaf shape and form a wide, umbrella canopy. Plant in a large pot with drain holes at the bottom in rich well-composted soil in partial shade with some shelter from the wind.
2. Italian cypress
If the image of the rolling hills of Tuscany punctuated with the pointing fingers of dark green cypress trees features in your travel dreams, this is the tree for you. You’ll need a solid concrete or terracotta pot with good drainage and a partially shaded position. Monthly feeds with a specialist fertiliser and regular watering should give you good initial growth, especially if you avoid pruning.
3. Olive Tree
Slow-growing and drought resistant, olive trees grow remarkably well in containers. With gnarled branches and lovely deep green foliage, an olive tree makes a real statement. Again, good drainage, well fertilised soil and a partially sheltered position is ideal, and overwintering in a conservatory or greenhouse is advisable.
So, grab a drink, settle onto your outback reclining chair and imagine you’re in Italy, Greece, or Japan!
