Start composting on Earth Day

Today is Earth Day, which is all about prompting us to reduce the negative impact we have on the environment. Composting is perhaps the single most important way in which any gardener, however small their plot, can vastly improve their productivity in an eco-friendly way.

What is composting?

In simple terms, composting is the transformation of organic waste into fertiliser, which is then used to enrich our soil. It is the ultimate recycling, and all that is required is a small area to make a compost heap or place a composting bin, and the patience to allow nature to do the rest. As organic material rots down, it becomes rich in nutrients and a compost heap simply speeds up this natural process.

What can I put on my compost heap?

All organic food waste like vegetables scraps, potato peelings and overripe fruit can be composted, as can eggshells, most tea bags, coffee grounds, grass cuttings, leaves, pruned branches, and even shredded paper and soft cardboard. One important exception is that fats and meat products can’t be composted.
All you have to do is designate a corner away from your Lifestyle Garden furniture for a compost area and get tipping!

How do I maintain my compost heap?

Your compost needs turning over with a garden fork every few weeks to introduce oxygen, which hastens aerobic fermentation. Microorganisms, fungi and bacteria, along with worms, woodlice and other insects, will occupy your compost heap and their presence is highly beneficial, further speeding up the breaking down of material.

Easy, free, and environmentally sound, composting is your passport to a better way of gardening.
