Caring for your poinsettia this Christmas

The beautiful star-shaped red leaves of poinsettia plants make gorgeous living Christmas decorations and have become a typical feature in homes across the country during the holiday season.

They became a Christmas favourite thanks to a story from Mexico. The legend says that a poor girl wanted to give a gift to the baby Jesus in the manger scene. She didn’t have money for an expensive gift, so collected a bouquet of weeds instead. As she offered her token of love, the weeds transformed into the elaborate poinsettia.

For a happy and blooming poinsettia this Christmas, follow these simple care guidelines:

Conditions over Christmas

Poinsettias like humid, semi-cool and bright but not direct light conditions. They also like a lot of moisture. While they might look pretty on the mantlepiece above the fire, they wouldn’t thrive there. They would make a lovely dining table centrepiece or could take pride of place on a sideboard.

While they like to be watered, don’t sit them in water-filled saucers, as this could lead to root rot. You could add other plants nearby to increase humidity.

After the holidays

If you choose to care for your poinsettia into next year, let the plant dry out after leaf bracts have fallen, but don’t dry it out completely. Add fertiliser every couple of weeks, but not when it’s in bloom. When spring comes, take the plant back to the sunlight and trim branches back. You might want to re-pot it as well.

With the right care, you should have some more beautiful, blooming red leaves for next Christmas.
