The festive season is full of traditions, many of which are celebrated worldwide. However, there are a few British Christmas traditions that are uniquely ours, some of which may confuse other countries and cultures, but most of them are signs that Christmas has arrived in the UK.
Going to the pantomime
Many families enjoy going to the pantomime over Christmas, or ‘panto’ as it is so often fondly dubbed. These over the top performances of classic stories that get the audience involved have been a British thing since Victorian times, and they are now a great way to enjoy the festive season.
Christmas adverts
Heart-warming Christmas adverts have become an annual tradition in the UK over the past 10 years or so, with everyone eager to be the first to see the new John Lewis ad or Marks and Spencer, counting down until the day they see it on the TV. Most of these adverts consist of a unique short story, often advertising Christmas food or Christmas decorations.
Christmas crackers
Christmas crackers are also a British tradition that can be dated back to the Victorian era and are often found on the table or artificial Christmas trees throughout the season. When most countries think of crackers, they think of the snack that can be often eaten with cheese. However, Brits love to pull these on Christmas day and find small toys or novelty items inside, a very silly joke, and a paper crown to wear while they eat.
