Tips for purchasing garden nets

Garden nets can have a number of uses – from keeping birds or rabbits safely housed, to protecting flowers, fruit or vegetable beds.

Here are some tips to remember when buying nets.

Soft or hard?

Whether you want soft nets or hard mesh ones depends on what they will be used for.

If you are building a home for chickens or rabbits, tough galvanised wire netting or weld mesh will ensure they cannot get through it. If it is to be laid on top of flower beds, soft nets will likely make a better choice.

Knowing the difference

You can get netting that protects produce from wild birds. It contains holes specifically designed to keep them away from flowers or fruit, while letting bees in.

Then there is fencing mesh, which is designed to protect flowers and plants that are climbing walls and fences in your garden. You can also buy pond netting with smaller sized holes that keeps unwanted wildlife away from your fish.

Consider fleece

Fleece is not just something you wear – you can also get it for your garden.

Plant warming fleece is a different type of net without holes that provides a layer of insulation for delicate flowers, to shield them against harsh winter frosts. It lets air and light through to help keep them alive, too.

Purchase pegs

If you do not want to be constantly jumping up from your Outback reclining chairs to put the nets back in place, pegs are one of the best solutions. You can get them made out of everything from plastic to steel.
