We are not all fortunate enough to have space in our gardens for fruit, vegetables and flowers.
That does not mean having to go without fresh, home-grown produce though. There are some vegetables and fruits that can be grown just as well in hanging baskets.
Which to pick?
It tends to be smaller fruits and vegetables that grow best in these baskets, due to the more restricted room. One popular choice is tomatoes, and there are even tomato varieties bred specially for hanging baskets – such as the Tumbler F1. Stick to one for each basket though, as they consume high quantities of water and nutrients from the soil.
Strawberries are another fruit that is ideal for hanging baskets. They will be simple to pick each summer, and can be enjoyed while sitting back on your Norfolk Leisure LIFE garden furniture on sunny days.
In terms of vegetables, beans and peas will both grow well in a hanging basket, as will summer radishes, carrots with stump roots, beetroot and lettuce. You will be surprised at how much choice is available to you.
How to plant them
Planting fruit or vegetables in hanging baskets is the same as planting flowers. Remove any chains and cup the basket with a flowerpot or bucket for steadiness.
A soil sack turned inside out will work well as a liner, but remember to make holes for draining the water. Standard potting soil mixes will be fine – just make sure to water them every day!
