It’s great for kids to ditch the screens for a while and get out for some fresh air. If that can be coupled with the satisfaction of watching a plant or flower grow from seed, even better. Most kids will love getting their hands dirty and checking in with a growing seedling over the weeks of its growth. Here are some excellent flowers and plants to get the kids started.
Sunflowers
They are big, bold and bright and can grow to incredible heights, making the happy sunflower one of the best child-friendly flowers to grow. As the name suggests, they love full sun, so plant the seeds in a sunny spot in the garden or in pots once the frost has gone for the year.
Strawberries
These take a little while to grow from seed, so there is a good lesson in patience here. However, once they get going, strawberries produce fruit all season and thrive in all sorts of baskets, pots and containers. Kids will love harvesting the bright, red berries, and eating them too.
Mint
Mint is not only useful in the kitchen, but is a fast-growing herb, making it very satisfying for kids to grow. It’s a great choice for those without gardens too, as it can happily thrive in a pot on a windowsill. Once you have some leaves, get your child to rub them between their fingers to release the fresh minty smell and use them in everything from cups of tea to salads.
There are lots of other child-friendly plants to enjoy growing with your children, but these three are firm favourites that will reap high rewards.
