The most festive house plant: poinsettia

A poinsettia is probably the plant most associated with Christmas – excepting any kind of fir tree, that is. This pretty pot plant with its leaf-style scarlet flowers will brighten up any home during the festive season, and they’re also readily available and great value for money.

Choosing your poinsettia

Once you’ve chosen a colourful, healthy-looking specimen, it’s best to wrap it in plastic or place in a carrier bag to protect it from the elements. As soon as you reach home, unwrap it and think about where to place it.

Placing your poinsettia

This plant requires a temperature of at least 13℃, so it’s definitely best to keep it indoors rather than out. A temperature of between 15 and 18℃ is ideal, so keep it away from heat sources as well as draughts.

A poinsettia will fare best in a well-lit spot, as it loves filtered light. It’s very sensitive to extreme temperatures, so is best kept in a position where the temperature will not fluctuate too much.

The plant’s sap can irritate skin, so it’s advisable to use gardening gloves when handling. It’s also wise to position it away from small children or pets for this reason.

Watering your poinsettia

Overwatering can damage the poinsettia, so try to water only when the compost has started to dry out on top. A regular misting can benefit this plant, and should prolong its life.

Otherwise, you can feed monthly with a high-potassium fertiliser low in nitrogen, and remove any spent foliage straightaway, keeping the surrounding compost clear.
