It’s easy to source old pallets from supermarkets or perhaps you’ve taken delivery of something yourself and now have some lying around. While you could take them to the recycling centre, wooden pallets have a variety of upcycle uses in the garden.
Go vertical
If you are low on space, why not place your pallet upright? Plant hanging flowers in the spaces and as they grow, they will tumble out over the edges at every level, creating a lovely colourful standing garden. You could either attach the pallet to a wall or fence, lean it, or attach feet and have it freestanding to create a double-sided flowering wall in the middle of a space.
Even if you have tiny garden or just a balcony, a vertical pallet can provide a large planting area for relatively little ground area.
Some gardeners use a vertical pallet for hanging pots, which can be a pretty option. You could paint the pallet to match your pots or go for a palette of colours to brighten up a corner.
Lay it flat
Alternatively, you can plant crops like vegetables and herbs in a horizontal pallet. The spaces lend themselves to ready-made vegetable rows.
You can also remove some pallet boards and pack small pots into spaces. Cover with some Perspex and you have an instant, portable greenhouse in which to raise your seeds.
Reshape
You could always dismantle your pallet and make it into something totally different. Make-shift coffee tables, potting tables and garden furniture have all been fashioned out of old pallets.
The creative possibilities are endless, but if all else fails, a pallet can always be used to feed the fire pit!
