How to make your own compost

Much like people, gardens do better when they’re well fed. Making your own compost provides you with a cheap, readily available supply of soil enriching material, and it’s also an environmentally friendly way to recycle much of your kitchen waste.

How to get started

You’ll need to select a corner of your garden for your composting bin. A shady area is fine – the key is to avoid any areas that are poorly drained, as your compost container needs to be open underneath and will get too waterlogged if there’s insufficient drainage. You can opt for a simple, soft-sided plastic composting bag, a hard plastic composting bin or a container made from wood. The aim is to keep the rain off, allow for circulation of air and ensure there’s good drainage.

What can you compost?

Ideally, you want a 50/50 mix of green organic material, like garden weeds, grass cuttings and vegetable peelings, and organic brown material, like leaves, woody stems and eggboxes. Try to keep the balance, as this will prevent your compost from becoming too soggy.

Most uncooked organic food waste is fine, although make sure no fats or meat products find their way into your compost. Any cardboard can go in, but remember to tear it up first – smaller pieces break down more quickly.

How do you maintain compost?

You need to turn your heap every few weeks. Use a garden fork to lift and turn the contents. This allows air to enter the compost, and it’s also a practical way for you to assess if the compost is too dry and needs watering.

Whenever you find worms while you’re gardening, pop them into your compost heap. They’ll do all the hard work for you, so you can sit back and relax on your Supremo Bari garden furniture.
