How to keep your pond clear of algae

Ponds are great features for the garden, not only because they provide something extra to look at while you’re sitting on your Supremo Bari garden furniture, but also because they encourage lots of different types of plants and wildlife to visit your garden.

However, keeping your pond clean is one of the bigger jobs on the garden to-do list. Luckily, getting rid of the algae responsible for the dirty depths is actually easier than you think.

Add more plants to your pond

Algae differs from normal plants in that it doesn’t have roots or leaves to store energy for periods where there is less sunlight or carbon dioxide to feed on. Adding more plants to your pond will provide more competition for this sunlight and nutrients, and ultimately will slow the growth of algae down.

Waterlilies are great for this purpose as they can expand from the surface while using nutrients from below and blocking out light that the algae relies on.

Use a water pump and filter

A water pump and filter regularly disturbs the water, so as well as creating attractive water movements, it removes debris from dead leaves and plants that algae usually feeds on. This also gives other plants underneath more chance to grow and compete with the algae.

Be patient

These methods will work well in time, but it won’t be an overnight effect, especially if your pond is rife with algae. The key is to be patient as well as consistent, as all gardeners will know too well!
