How to attract sparrows to your garden

If you want to be able to watch birds in the back garden from your Outback reclining chairs, house sparrows are a good place to start. They are among the most common UK garden birds, so attracting them can be easy if you know what to do. This guide will tell you everything you need to know.

What do sparrows look like?

There are several different kinds of sparrows – including the house sparrow, the song sparrow and the fox sparrow. They each have their own distinct plumage colour patterns, but they also have a number of features in common. Sparrows are typically coloured a mix of white, grey and brown. They also generally have short, stout beaks.

You can tell the house sparrow from other species by its patterning. It will have grey head feathers and white marks on each cheek.

How can you attract them?

The best way to attract sparrows is to set up a feeder and a bird bath in your garden. House sparrows are particularly fond of seeds, but they will eat other foods too. Millet, unsalted peanuts and cracked corn are all good choices. These birds also like to eat insects, particularly when they are breeding.

One thing that you should bear in mind when you are putting up your feeders is that house sparrows are ground feeders. This means you will get better results if you choose low platform feeders rather than tall ones. Keep them clean and the water fresh too.

It will be easy to attract house sparrows if you follow this simple guide.
