Here in the UK, most homes will have a Christmas tree adorned with baubles, fairy lights and tinsel. Across the globe, Christmas trees are also a festive feature in many homes, but there are some variations on what is hung from the branches.
Here’s a look at how some other countries decorate their trees for Christmas:
USA
America and the UK have similar decorating styles when it comes to Christmas, but in the United States, it’s common to string garlands of popcorn on their trees.
Japan
Christmas is not widely celebrated in Japan, and it tends to be a normal working day. For those who do celebrate and have a Christmas tree, origami decorations have become popular over the years. In the past, due to the lack of Christmas fare in shops, the Japanese had to make their own decorations.
Australia
Here in the UK, a traditional Christmas means snow and cold, but in Australia, Christmas takes place over their hot summer. Therefore, their Christmas tree decorations are less about snow and often more about summery seashells.
Ukraine
It might seem odd, but the Ukrainian tradition of hanging spiders on their trees is borne out of folklore. In the story, a poor family that couldn’t afford Christmas decorations was visited by a Christmas spider. The spider spun its webs on the family’s Christmas tree, and the webs turned to gold and silver on Christmas morning.
Perhaps you could borrow one of these ideas and add a touch of international flare to your Christmas tree this year.
