Four methods for protecting wooden garden furniture

Wood is one of the most frequently used materials for garden furniture.

It can be an excellent choice, but you may find that you want to take steps to protect it. Here are four methods that you can use.

Painting

Painting your furniture will certainly help to preserve and protect the wood against the elements. It can also make furniture that you have had in your garden for years feel fresh by providing a new look.

Two coats should be added at the minimum, with more if you want the colour to really stand out. You should bear in mind though that paint can be tricky to remove if you change your mind.

Staining

Staining the wood is a less drastic way of protecting it. Doing this will give the wood a fresh tint, but not a completely different colour.
Wood stain in natural wood shades is widely available to purchase.

Oiling

This is an especially effective solution for furniture made from hardwood like teak. Applying a coat of teak oil will help to ensure that the furniture is not damaged by rain and that it stays looking fresh.

Rub it in gently along the grain and wait for the coats to dry before applying the next one.

Covering

The simplest solution of all is to buy a product like Lifestyle garden furniture covers. All you have to do is drape the covers over the pieces and it will ensure complete protection against all of the elements. That way, your wooden furniture retains its lustre!
