The middle of this month brings with it Weed Your Garden Day!
Set for 13th June, it’s the national day for all garden owners to get to work ridding their lawns and beds of pesky weeds.
There are ways of weeding that don’t involve bending and pulling though, for those who have a bad back.
Use mulch
Laying around two to three inches of mulch over your bedding areas will stop weeds from germinating. It will also block those already sprouting from the moist soil they need to thrive.
If you grow vegetables, prepare the mulch from compost and straw. For flowerbeds, gravel, shredded leaves and bark will work better.
Chop them off!
Chopping off weeds using a hoe can actually be better than pulling them out of the soil. This is because the latter method brings weed seeds into the sunlight, which helps them with germination.
Cutting them away is also easier on the back, so you can relax on your Supremo Tuscany chairs afterwards without wincing. The chopped weeds make useful compost, too.
Plant them closely
Laying your plants more closely together in the beds will make it tougher for weeds to find the nutrients, moisture and light they need. This will work well with plants in annual beds or perennial borders, but not with vegetables. Remember to research the advised planting distance and cut it by 25%.
The hot water trick
For lawn and flower bed weeds, try pouring hot water over them. This will cause the weeds to dehydrate and die.
We hope you find these tips useful for creating a weed-free garden this summer!
