A guide to garden birds and suet

If you are hunting the shops for food choices for a bird station, one that you are sure to come across is suet. This blog will offer a guide to giving birds suet – covering all you need to know.

Why offer it to birds?

We humans do not eat much suet these days, but it is still very popular among garden birds. That is because it contains a lot of saturated fat, which helps to give birds energy. Suet is fine for birds all year round, but it becomes truly invaluable during winter. Birds need extra energy to make it through that season, so giving them suet is a true lifesaver!

What are the options?

One of the most common ways to provide it is by purchasing suet cakes. These are blocks of suet that you can either crush up and leave on your bird table or keep whole. If you opt for the latter method, you will need a suet cake feeder with a cage around it.

The other main way people offer suet is through bird fat balls. They are a mix of suet, seeds, nuts and dried mealworms, all shaped together as a ball. Like the cakes, you can crush them up and leave them on the bird table or keep them whole and put them in fat ball feeders.

Which birds like it?

Among the garden birds fond of suet are blackbirds, great tits and blue tits.

Now you know how to feed birds suet and why you should be doing so, so why not give it a go?
