12 Christmas trends you don’t want to miss for 2022

Christmas 2022 is set to be bigger and better than ever following the last two years of uncertainty during the pandemic, and the year has also given us some new trends for the festive season. The following trends are just some of the ones you don’t want to miss for 2022, so get your inspiration boards out now!

1. Natural colour schemes

One trend that is fast-growing among Christmas decorations is the browns and greens of the natural aesthetic, bringing the outdoor colours inside. Natural textures are also popular, with earthy decorations such as logs by the fire and a variety of green trees and sprigs of holly added here and there. These tones can be complemented by gold ornaments to get that cosy rustic feel.

2. Snow covered Christmas trees

A popular item this Christmas is the snow-covered Christmas tree. This is also part of the natural theme, bringing the wonders of the outdoors inside and complementing the green and brown tones of winter.

3. Christmas trees with a twist

While most people still opt for the traditional Christmas tree in the corner of the room, sometimes there’s not a lot of space in your living area and you have to make do. This year has seen the increase in alternative Christmas trees such as wall trees, which save space and are not harmful to pets as they are mounted on the wall and effectively tucked away. Other types on the rise are non-traditional trees; as long as it’s plant related, people are decorating them!

4. Candles

Candles are growing in popularity not just during Christmas time, but the festive season is even more of an excuse to get them out and create a cosy setting. For 2022, there are candles of all shapes and sizes to pop on the dinner table as well as wrap up for your loved ones!

5. DIY decorations

This year, it’s all about paper stars, chains and even Christmas trees. They’re great fun for the kids to make, or even if you want to have a little creative project yourself. DIY decorations save money as well, something that everyone is aiming for this year.

6. DIY gifts

As well as DIY decor, homemade gifts are great thoughtful presents for loved ones. A lot of people developed new hobbies during lockdown, and this has seen the rise of more arts and crafts projects. Knitting is no longer just a hobby for your retirement years!

7. Owls

While the traditional bird for Christmas is usually the robin, the owl has also been adopted by the festive season this year, it seems. This may be because of the snowy owl, with its feathers as white as snow, but for whatever reason there is set to be more and more decorations featuring these feathery friends.

8. Reusable Christmas accessories

Saving money is again part of this trend this year, because more people are looking for innovative, inexpensive solutions for Christmas. One of these ways is to become even more sustainable and get reusable crackers. Unless you fork out for the most expensive crackers, the gifts inside them can seem a bit useless and end up being chucked away. Making your own cracker and filling it every year with things you know will make your guests smile will be even better.

Gift wrap is also becoming sustainable this year, with fabrics being used instead of paper.

9. Lights

You can’t have Christmas without lights, and this year is no different. There are more and more choices of Christmas light nowadays, some that can even be left up year-round. If you’re worried about wires and want a minimalist choice, pre-lit Christmas trees are great because they bring a sparkle without the need to unwind any lights every year.

10. Advent calendars

Advent is an exciting time, and chocolate advent calendars have been around for years. Now, however, there’s pretty much every type of advent calendar you can think of. Following on from the sustainable and DIY theme of 2022, you can buy ‘make your own advent calendar’ kits. If you fancy something luxurious, there’s lots of cosmetic or jewellery advent calendars around. You can even get advent calendars for your pets!

11. Letterbox gifts

A trend that came to the height of fruition during the pandemic was letterbox gifts or flowers. As you can do everything online nowadays and sending parcels to someone if you know they’re out is risky, letterbox gifts do exactly what they say and fit in a normal sized letterbox. More people are using this idea to send gifts, care packages, and even flowers to family and friends.

12. Light up trails

Outdoor events also gained popularity during the pandemic, and they are still popular today. There are a few places you can go to enjoy outdoor light displays and grab a cosy hot chocolate together throughout woodland trails.
