When it comes to compost for your garden, you have two choices: ordinary garden compost and multi-purpose compost. Both of them have their advantages, but multi-purpose compost is the more flexible solution. This makes it one of the most popular products that we stock.

What's the difference between compost and multi-purpose compost?

This type of compost is one that is formulated to help with a variety of tasks in the garden. It is created out of a mix of ingredients, which generally include loam, peat and nutrients such as fertilisers. These are put together in careful quantities to ensure the ideal blend. This makes it different from standard garden compost, which is produced entirely from organic matter, including dead plants and scraps of kitchen waste.

Is multi-purpose compost good for plants?

Multi-purpose compost can be utilised when sowing and planting in beds or pots and will help with the growth of all types of plant. The mix of nutrients is designed to ensure healthy plant growth, with slow-release fertilisers added to the blend for sustained plant feeding. By contrast, ordinary garden compost serves the strict function of improving the structure of your soil and its ability to retain water.

Another key difference between the two is the texture, with multi-purpose compost being much finer. This allows more air to get to the soil and makes it easier for water to drain. For that reason, multi-purpose compost can be the better choice for planting in containers, because it will help the roots to develop.

How much compost do I need?

The volume of multi-purpose compost you need will depend on the size of the area where you are planting and how deep you want the compost layer to be. The first step you will need to take is to measure the planting area, working out both the width and the length.

Then, you will have to figure out what depth is needed. The required depth in most situations will be around 5 cm, but if you are planting in raised beds that can vary. When you have calculated the volume, add a further 10 to 20%. This is because multi-purpose compost compresses and shrinks in the soil.
