What to do in the garden this May – Part 2

Our previous post on gardening in May focused on your lawn, hedges, pond and the planting of hanging baskets and pots. Now, we turn our attention to the flowers your grown in your garden, as well as its edible contents – the vegetables and fruit.

Flora

• Deal with any aphid infestations on roses by washing them off with water or using an appropriate pesticide
• May is also the ideal time to plant any new roses
• Transfer any hardy annuals or dahlias from the treehouse to the garden at the end of the month
• Use foxgloves, peonies and tulips for indoor floral displays, ensuring you cut in the morning or evening to avoid wilting
• Nasturtiums are really simple to grow – just push the seeds into damp compost. The flowers and leaves are also edible, with a peppery kick

Fruit and veg

• Place straw between strawberry plants to prevent mould and keep the berries clean
• You can plant courgettes, marrow, pumpkins, squash and sweetcorn. Keep them in the greenhouse until the seedlings are established, then plant out
• Earth up any potatoes by pulling up the soil with a hoe once they break through
• Grow peas, kale, Brussels sprouts, swede, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce and radishes either outside or under the cover of a cloche
• Sow any runner or French beans in well-drained, sunlit soil
• Support broad beans by hoeing soil around the base of each stem

One you’ve toiled and the day is done, why not relax on your favourite lifestyle garden furniture with a drink, and literally enjoy the fruits of your labour?
