You may well know the RSPB as the first port of all for all things ornithological, but did you know that the organisation oversees a network of local groups across the UK?
RSPB local groups
The aim of the groups is to help people meet others with similar interests, who together can contribute to the future of our feathered friends. Local groups become actively involved in supporting and promoting the RSPB, both within their local communities and nationally, with advice on everything from what bird food to use, to where to spot interesting species.
Local groups hold regular meetings, and also arrange trips to places that will interest their members.
Wirral local group
Each local group has its own microsite within the RSPB website, and the Wirral local group can be found here.
Monthly meetings are currently held at Bromborough Civic Centre in the evening, on the first Thursday of each month.
Events organised by the Wirral local group are open to nonmembers, and you do not need any birdwatching experience to attend or participate. Upcoming dates on the calendar that might interest birdwatchers include trips to Kings Gap, Hoylake Promenade; the Inland Sea, Anglesey; and Stapledon Wood in West Kirby, plus talks on birds of The Gambia, British Columbia and hawfinches in Wales.
Chester local group
The Chester group’s very own website can be found here.
Meetings take place at Christleton Parish Hall, and the group’s upcoming events include trips to Flint and Connah’s Quay, the River Clywd and Frodsham Marshes, while talk topics include birds of Belarus, Hungary and Tanzania, plus bird of prey monitoring and swift conservation.
