What are the most common types of garden birds in the UK?

Birds are a standard sight for anyone who has a garden, but not every species of bird is likely to be among them – even after you’ve put feeders up.

There are certain types of garden birds that are more likely to be drawn to your lawn, with these being three of the most common:

Starling

Starlings came in third on a study of the most common garden birds conducted by the RSPB. That means you stand a good chance of spotting one, especially if you provide the right food for them.

Starlings enjoy berries and fruit, but also dried mealworms and suet. They are fascinating to see up close, because that is when their subtle spotted plumage becomes visible.

Chaffinch

This bird is rated the second most common garden species, and it is one of the most colourful of the small birds.

These little ones are often crowded out of the feeders by larger birds, but the chaffinch is adept at picking up bird seed that has fallen onto the ground and hedges. If you add some hedging to your garden, it will help in attracting this charming bird.

House Sparrow

The house sparrow is the most common bird found in UK gardens, according to the RSPB study, but sadly is declining in numbers.

You can attract them to your garden with feeders full of seed or nuts, but they also like to feast on small caterpillars. These are also fed to their chicks, so creating a wild patch in the garden for caterpillars to flourish will help to encourage more frequent visits.
