How to encourage birds to visit your garden

Birds can bring a lot of benefits to a garden.

These chirpy visitors are a colourful presence that can be soothing to watch, but they also help to remove weeds and insect pests. They can even assist in the pollination of your blooms! So, what can you do to ensure plenty of garden birds?

Put Feeders Up

This is probably the most important thing you can do if you want to attract the company of birds.

Setting up feeders in spots where they are clearly visible is guaranteed to bring about feathered friends once they discover them. Use different bird food in each feeder for variety, as finches, robins and sparrows love sunflower hearts, while long tailed and blue tits prefer to snack on suet cakes.

Offer a Drink

Most of us like something to drink with our meals, and birds are no different. Supplement your feeders with either a specialist bird bath or a water bowl. Remember to change the water each day so it is fresh, and install it in a spot where the birds are able to see any possible predators that may be lurking.

Provide a Nest

If you create somewhere within your garden that is safe for birds to build their nests, you can be sure they will do so.

Buy nesting boxes and install them in places that offer shelter from predators. If you want to attract wrens or robins, go for open-fronted boxes. Classic boxes with small holes will bring the widest range of garden birds, while sparrow terraces are designed specifically for that breed.
