Three points to consider for bird tables

A bird table is a simple addition to your garden that will encourage birds to visit. There are several different styles to consider depending on which type of bird you want to encourage. Alike all features in your garden, bird tables need some care to remain in good working order and, more importantly, to keep them safe for the birds.

Here a few points to consider before buying your bird table:

Size

A small table will result in crowding and potentially fighting, which will ultimately become a deterrent. A surface of about three to four square foot is ideal if you have the space.

The post

Not only does the post need to be steady, stable and secure, but you should also give some thought to other creatures able to climb it. Birds will only feed in spots that feel safe. If a squirrel or cat can scamper up to their feeding spot, they will stay away, so you should opt for a table with a smooth post.

Design

Check that there are no sharp edges that could cause injury, and that the table has some natural drainage. Whilst wood is the most commonly used material and looks beautifully natural, don’t dismiss other materials that could be easier to clean or maintain. You could opt for no roof, but roofless tables might encourage larger birds to land, so if you like the idea of small birds feeding, a fairly low roof might be better.

Don’t worry if it’s a few days before you see any activity. Once the local birds realise there is a new, safe food source, they will feel brave and come for a visit.
