Three plants that can survive in any weather

The weather in Britain can make growing plants a daunting prospect.

Sudden downpours and gale-force winds will leave many flowers drenched and bedraggled. Happily, there are some hardy plants that can handle the worst conditions, like these listed below.

Hawthorn blossom

This plant produces delicate white blossom that will beautify any garden, but do not be fooled by its appearances, as it’s a tough cookie.

It is most often seen on hedgerows, but you can also grow it as a mini tree within your garden. It will look a treat from your Supremo Palermo garden furniture in summer, but you can still admire it from the comfort of your home once winter arrives.

Japanese holly

Despite the name, this does not look much like the holly we more often see in the UK.

Rather than red berries, it produces pretty white flowers that look a lot like the, but are much hardier. The leaves will not get scorched when the sun finally appears, and it can cope comfortably with high winds and heavy rainfall.

Elder

This is a small tree or shrub that is considered to be one of the most pleasing to the eye.

It has pretty leaves and black berries that contrast nicely with the fragrant white flowers. Like many of the hardiest plants it is native to the UK, it will thrive in both sodden and dry soil, as well as in parts of the garden that are shaded or in the full glare of the sun.
