Some elements of Christmas are genuinely timeless. It is hard to imagine that decorating the tree with twinkling fairy lights will ever go out of fashion, but there are other festive traditions that have fallen by the wayside over the years.
In this post, we will look at some you could try reviving to make this festive season a little more special.
Wassailing
No, don’t panic – this doesn’t involve going out on a boat.
It is an English tradition that dates back to pre-Christian times, and involves brewing up mulled punch in a bowl. People would then take this to each other’s homes to toast their good health. Bringing it back will be a great way to spread some festive cheer among friends and neighbours.
Ghost stories
Christmas gave us the most famous spooky story in the shape of ‘A Christmas Carol’, which is a good reason to try this one.
Christmas Eve was the favoured time for telling ghostly tales, as it was considered to be a night when those who have passed on drew nearer to our world. Reviving this tradition would be a perfect alternative to watching repeats of old sitcoms on television (although, if this is your plan, there’s no judgement here!).
Pickle hunt
This is a particularly odd tradition that no-one is quite sure of the origins of.
It involves concealing an ornament shaped like a pickle among the baubles and lights on your Christmas tree. The youngster who finds it gets a toy or a treat of some kind, so your children will love the idea of bringing this strange tradition back.
