As we progress towards the end of the first month of the year, it’s important to make sure you’ve thought about all of those outstanding jobs in the garden. Even though it’s cold outside and not half as appealing to go and get out your outback reclining chairs just yet, there are still plenty of things you can do to continue your garden maintenance.
Flowers
As long as the ground hasn’t frozen over, you can still plant a few flowers this month to set your garden up nicely. Make sure you’re still clearing away foliage and debris from other plant beds.
Fruit and vegetables
Similarly, for fruit and vegetable growers, make sure you prune any dead branches off your fruit trees. You can now also start to note down and order your garlic bulbs and other seeds in preparation for spring planting.
Greenhouse maintenance
Give your greenhouse a good tidy ready for the year ahead, and take steps to ensure that if it does get frosty, your plants and crops won’t suffer. Take advantage of any sun we may get and place winter salads in a prime position.
General garden maintenance
Don’t forget about your wildlife – keep bird baths topped up and keep an eye on them if they freeze over. You can also help birds in advance of nesting season by putting up bird boxes.
This month is also the perfect time to repair any damaged structures or fences, and to give your garden a quick tidy. You can also check that your lawn mower still works!
