People with bird feeders can sometimes neglect to fill them up during the summer.
That’s because they have bought into the idea that birds do not need help from them in the warmer weather.
This isn’t exactly true. The lighter nights of summer are a great time for watching birds from your rattan garden furniture, and we’ve listed a few pointers to encourage more of these feathery visitors.
Placement
The best place to situate your feeders throughout the summer is a spot that offers plenty of shade.
For one thing, this will allow the birds to stay cool in warmer temperatures. For another, it will help to prevent the seed and fruit provided going off due to the heat.
When you are considering feeder placement, you should also remember to keep them well away from windows. This will ensure the birds do not fly into them and injure themselves when trying to get at the food.
Water
Putting out a birdbath filled with water will enable the birds to stay hydrated in the hot summer weather. Make sure that you replace the water each day to keep it fresh and free from bacteria.
Food types
General bird seed mixes that include the likes of sunflower hearts will ensure you get plenty of different birds visiting your garden. If you want to attract the likes of song thrushes, blackbirds and robins though, you will need specialty seed, alongside berries and fruit. Avoid suet-based foods as they are much more likely to go mouldy in the heat.
We hope this handy guide helps ensure your garden is a haven for wildlife this summer!
