How to use your firepit safely

There’s nothing quite like the mesmerising draw of real flames, and a firepit can provide a stunning focal point to your outdoor entertaining space, introducing warmth and glamour to your garden. Follow the tips below to help you and your loved ones enjoy this attractive addition to your garden safely.

Provide a stable and solid base

The most vital safety concern for firepit users is to avoid the firepit itself being in any way unstable, so a solid, reliable base is especially important. Whether placed on a paved patio, a decked area or a lawn, ensure that all the firepit’s feet are completely level, and test its stability by rocking it before lighting. A protective fire mat is advised for use on wooden decking, or to protect your lawn if your pit is to be placed on a grassed area.

Keep away from flammable materials

Place your firepit well away from soft furnishings, garden furniture and anything that could catch fire, including structures like fences, garden sheds and summerhouses. A minimum distance of at least three metres is recommended. Never put a firepit in a gazebo or tent, as embers from the open flames are liable to rise in the heat, resulting in a significant fire risk.

Be prepared

Fires are beautiful, hypnotic and unpredictable. While the idea of a firepit is to minimise that unpredictability, you should always have a fire extinguisher or fire blanket to hand and avoid using your firepit in windy conditions, where it can be much easier for sparks and embers to travel.

Many models come with added safety features. For example, the La Hacienda Brava Firepit Mesh comes with a mesh lid, reducing the risk of escaping debris. The integrated central firepit section of specialist firepit tables offer a great way of enjoying all the benefits of a firepit while having the reassurance of flame-resistant design and added safety elements. With the Mercury Square Gas Fire Pit Table, the flames are encased by a transparent screen.

Have a set of family firepit rules

If you have younger children, it’s always helpful to run through a set of safety rules with them. Older teenagers who may want to use the firepit with their friends also need to be regularly reminded of the potential dangers. If you’re having a social gathering or party, remember that excess alcohol and firepits are not a great mix. Consider nominating a person to take responsibility for the firepit – a bit like a designated driver. Family members could take it in turns to take on this role.

Finally, a lit firepit should never be left unattended, and once your evening has come to a close, it’s crucial that someone takes charge of waiting until the fire is completely out. Spreading any remaining glowing embers over a greater surface area will hasten the extinguishing of the fire.

While this may sound alarming, remember that problems with firepits are extremely rare, and, when used sensibly, they can be a wonderfully atmospheric and fun way to enhance evenings spent in your garden.
