If you’re a garden lover, not much is going to stop you tending to your garden and creating your perfect setup complete with Charles Taylor garden furniture. However, we must protect our health, especially our backs, and gardening is very physical, so there are certain considerations you must take to avoid back strain.
Warm up before you start
Like any exercise, it’s important to do some simple warm up exercises. Stretch all of the muscles you will be using while gardening, and especially target your back.
Keep all of your tools close by
Make sure you’ve got the perfect setup by checking that you have all of the right tools and objects near to you so that you can easily reach them and not strain your body.
Make sure you’re comfortable
For any gardening that involves bending over, like weeding or digging, make sure you either kneel or squat. You can use an old pillow for cushioning your knees. If you have raised beds, use a stool or chair while you work. For tending to plants higher up, consider a step ladder so you’re not straining your back with the constant lift of your arms.
Avoid repetitive motions
The more repetitive a motion is, the more strain it will put on your body. Break up your garden jobs so you’re only doing half an hour of each activity.
Listen to your body
If your body is telling you that something is too heavy or too tough, listen to it. This also goes for when your body is telling you to have a break or call it a day.
After all, your garden won’t become perfect in one day, so make sure you’re looking after yourself while you work on it.
