Charles Taylor garden furniture is sturdy, durable and designed to stand the test of time. However, like all wooden furniture used outside, it needs to be looked after to improve its longevity.
Wood is a natural product that will respond to the elements, so here are some tips for keeping it as healthy as possible.
Clean and oil
Applying wood oil before use is a good idea to protect the wood from both rough weather and the sun’s rays. It will also help protect against mildew. You should apply oil 2-3 times throughout the summer season and again before storing your furniture for the winter. You should wash the furniture with a pressure hose first but make sure the wood is completely dry before applying the oil.
Retightening
Wood will expand and constrict in the heat and cold, and will also respond to getting wet and dry repeatedly. If your table and chairs have developed some wobbles, it doesn’t mean the furniture has had its day. Now and again, going around all the nuts and bolts with a spanner will get all the joints tightened up again.
Storage
It’s not advisable to store wooden furniture anywhere too warm like in a conservatory, as the wood may crack and dry out. However, it is a good idea to protect it from relentless rain or snow. An ideal option is a shed or garage where it is out of the elements but still well ventilated. You might wish to cover your furniture, but if you do, go for fabrics that allow it to breathe.
