Gardening has everything to do with the environment, but even the greenest of gardens can benefit from a few extra tips to make them as sustainable as they can be.
Plant trees
Tress are great at capturing carbon from the air and storing it away, giving us oxygen in return. While not all gardens have enough space for large trees, even planting a medium-sized tree has enormous benefits.
Take part in the ‘Mains to Rains’ pledge
Instead of using mains water in our homes to fill up watering cans or watering straight from a hose pipe, make use of the rain. The UK gets plenty of it, so collect it up by leaving your watering can outside to catch the drops, or use a water butt to collect the rainfall as it hits the roof.
Make your own compost
Waste from your kitchen or garden can be turned into compost, which is one of the most environmentally friendly actions you can take, typically saving more than 0.1kg of fossil carbon emissions for every kilo of home compost made.
Make your garden pollinator friendly
By growing a large variety of different plants in your garden, you can make it more friendly to the important pollinators that visit, such as bees and butterflies.
Grow your own veg
Growing your own produce is not only really beneficial for your health, but it also helps to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
