For many of us in the UK, when there is the slightest chance of a summery afternoon, we’re more than eager to fire up the BBQ and gather round on our rattan garden furniture for a feast. This year, you might want to think about how you can enjoy your BBQ while keeping the planet in mind too.
Plant-based food
One of the biggest ways to help the planet is to consider plant-based options for your BBQ this year. Some food supply chains can contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions quite considerably, but vegetables account for a lot fewer emissions than, beef, for example.
Reusable plates and cutlery
It’s a nice feeling not to have to wash up all your guests’ plates after a BBQ, but single-use plates are actually contributing to more and more waste going into landfill sites. Providing your guests with reusable cutlery will mean a little bit more cleaning up after the BBQ, but will help the planet considerably.
Limit food waste
If you can, it’s a good idea to keep your leftovers fresh so they can be eaten at a later date, rather than being thrown away. As soon as your guests have chosen their side bits and sauces, get them back in the fridge quickly so they don’t spoil.
Eco-friendly BBQ
It may be surprising to some that the majority of charcoal found in the UK was actually imported from areas where the environment has been damaged to produce it via deforestation or forest degradation, so choose charcoal that has been made in a more eco-friendly manner.
However you decide to enjoy your summer, be sure to enjoy the good weather as much as possible.
