With more natural wildlife habitats being replaced by buildings and properties, our gardens are some of the most important places for birds. Birds are naturally attracted to trees and greenery, but there are a few actions you can take to make your garden more bird friendly.
Grow your own bird feed
Providing shop-bought bird feed is great, as well as having a friendly bird feeder for them to explore. However, you can help them even more by providing a natural source of food by growing certain plants with seeds in your own garden, such as hazels or sunflowers.
Provide water
Water is very important for birds for both drinking and bathing. Keep a bird bath topped up every day and try to shelter it from predators.
Give them somewhere to shelter and nest
Birds need shelter just like we do, especially on colder nights. Densely planted areas will give them somewhere to nest and shelter. You can also create your own nest boxes in sheltered areas to give them somewhere safe and secure to hide.
Keep them safe
Birds will only visit a garden if they feel safe to do so. Placing bird feeders higher up and near cover can give them somewhere to retreat to if they need to.
Be patient
Once you’ve made your garden as bird friendly as possible, get ready to sit back on your Lifestyle garden furniture and wait, as it can take time for birds to discover your garden is a safe place and to become regular visitors.
