During times of good weather, it’s natural to want to sit out and enjoy it while it lasts, but it’s important that you’re properly protected from the sun when in your garden. Here’s a guide to staying safe in the sunshine:
Wear sunblock and top up regularly
A quality sunblock is your first defence against the sun, protecting you from burning and ensuring that you’re not over-exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays cause skin damage and accelerate ageing, and UVB rays cause reddening and eventual burning of the skin. It’s helpful to remember that both can cause cancers.
Make sure you check that your sunscreen blocks both UVA and UVB rays. You’re advised to use an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30, and to reapply generously every couple of hours.
Provide shade for you and your family
Having a shaded area of the garden means that no one ever needs to risk overexposure to the sun, and it’ll keep you much more comfortable too. Create permanent shade with a roofed structure, like a summerhouse or a gazebo, or make some temporary shade with a large patio parasol. Partial shade created by trees and hedging is useful too, and it’s an ideal place to place your rattan garden furniture, but bear in mind that more sun gets through dappled shade than we often realise.
The sun is at its strongest between midday and mid-afternoon, so save anything strenuous, like digging or mowing, for earlier or later in the day, and don’t forget to wear a hat.
With the right protection and access to shade, you can enjoy all the benefits of being out in the sunshine without any worry.
