Having a small garden does not have to hold you back when it comes to adding a pond, as you can create a micro pond out of a container! In this blog, we will provide a guide to doing that.
What should you use for it?
You will need a container that is reasonably big and watertight. This means something like a plastic tub or galvanised bath. Anything with a depth of around 50cm and diameter of at least 70cm will do. Make sure it has been thoroughly washed before adding water.
Where to put it
The ideal spot will be somewhere bright, but not in the full glare of the sun. Look for a corner spot with partial shade. If possible, you should bury the pond, as this makes accessing it easier for wildlife.
Why a micro pond is a good idea
If you like to laze on your Outback reclining chairs and watch the wildlife, a micro pond will really help with this. It will enable you to attract birds, butterflies, dragonflies and bees, as well as newts, toads and frogs. This is because it will serve as a water source. Not only will this make your garden more interesting, but it will also keep it healthy by providing natural pest control.
What plants should you add?
There will not be that much space, so you’ll need to make good use of it. Add a small water lily, oxygenators – for example, hornwort and starwort – and some marginals at the sides.
A micro pond will make for a smart addition to any garden.
