April is a month for getting busy in the garden if you want to reap the fruits in terms of beautiful and colourful blooms. Here are a few good plants to bed during this month for summer and early autumn flowering.
Angelica
If you start to bed in this purple-headed plant now, it will blossom between May and September. The best place to put it is towards the back of your garden beds, because its height ensures it will stand out there without blocking shorter plants. In addition to providing the kind of colour that makes a garden pleasant to look at when sitting on your Supremo Tuscany furniture, angelica also attracts butterflies and bees.
Cosmos
One of the many positives about this plant is the variety of colours that it offers. You can choose Cosmos Sea Shells, which are named because their white fluted petals resemble shells. Or you could opt for Cosmos ‘Gazebo Red’, which flowers with sizeable crimson petals. Whichever one you pick though, plant it in free-draining soil in a site where it will get plenty of sun and warmth. Cosmos will bloom from June to October.
Poppies
Poppies are another plant that flowers in a range of hues, from orange to red and pink, depending on the type you pick. April and May are ideal months for putting them in the ground if you want them to flower in time for summer and autumn, so they can add further colour to your garden.
Why not get started on planting these flowers so you can enjoy them this summer?
