The start of September means that the pace of growth in the garden is starting to slacken. It’s time to harvest those last few pieces of produce, and tidy up the garden ready for autumn.
You should find you have less to do in the garden over the coming months, which you might see as a curse or a blessing. Try to see it as the latter – more time to mull over what you might grow next year, and to finally relax on that new set of Norfolk Leisure Life garden furniture you invested in back in spring when it all started.
Harvest festival
You might carry on feeding your squash and pumpkins, as well as removing leaves to let in the sunlight, in the hope of a perfect specimen of two just in time for Halloween at the end of October. Harvest the last of your corn, beans, potatoes and courgettes, and you may have to pick any remaining tomatoes later this month. Even if they’re green, place on a windowsill in a bag with a banana, which will encourage them to turn their characteristic red (or yellow depending on variety).
New beginnings
It might be time to pack away these canes and lie your tomato plants flat, but you can still sow some species. Herbs such as coriander, chervil, and parsley can be grown – the latter in a shaded spot. You may also plant salads such as rocket, cress, spinach, hardy lettuces, mustards and spinach. It’s also a good time to plant sets of garlic and autumn onions.
