Four mistakes you can make with bird feeders

Birds are wonderful to look at when they come to your garden, and many of them also help with things like pollination.

Setting up feeders will enable you to attract different bird species – as long as you avoid these common errors.

Putting them in the wrong places

The ideal spot for a feeder will be where you can sit and watch the birds from your rattan garden furniture, and they can get the most benefit from it.

Pick a place that offers plenty of shelter and areas for them to perch – for example, shrub or tree branches. Make sure there is not too much covering though, as this can draw predators.

Only using one type of feeder

Setting up a range of feeders will give you a good chance of attracting many different birds.

You can get nectar feeders, fruit feeders, suet feeders, platform feeders and tube ones, as well as window feeders for songbirds.

Not cleaning the feeders often enough

Bird feeders need to be kept clean. In dry conditions, they should be washed out properly every fortnight.

When it is wet, this cleaning will need to be done more frequently. Not doing so will let bacteria and mould build up that can be harmful to birds.

Failing to fill them up

Birds are great at remembering regular food sources, so you need to keep your feeders filled up if you want them to become frequent visitors. That is something many neglect, however.
