Watching the birds is not an activity that has to be restricted to spring and summer. The winter months will bring their share of birds to your garden, as long as you make it welcoming. Here are some species to get your bird feeders out for this winter.
Bullfinch
If you live in the countryside, fairly near woodland, there is a good chance that your garden will attract bullfinches. They are distinctive birds with black head feathers and black and white wings. The males are particularly appealing, as they have striking pink feathers on their underbellies.
Great spotted woodpecker
This bird used to be a rare sight in the garden, but is now becoming more common. Its feathers are a beautiful mix of white, black and red, while it flies with a swooping undulating motion. Great spotted woodpeckers are especially fond of peanuts and suet cakes, so put some of those out to increase your chances.
Goldfinch
One of the most colourful birds of all is the goldfinch, which has black, white, brown, red and gold feathers. The red around its face and the gold on the wings are distinctive, making it instantly recognisable.
Blue tit
Blue tits are small birds that are coloured a mix of blue, yellow and white. This makes them stand out, so you should have no trouble spotting them in your garden. They are common, so just fill your feeders with bird seed and they are sure to show up.
