When you are first starting out as a bird watcher – or “birder” – it can be hard to make sense of what you’re looking at.
There are so many different types of birds and they often move quickly; but this blog will offer a guide to birds that are easier for those new to the hobby to identify.
Easy garden birds to identify
The ideal place to start watching for birds is in your own garden. For one, it means you and your family can relax on your Outback reclining chairs while you watch. All you need to do is put up some feeders and a bird bath and then wait.
One type of bird you will be able to spot easily is the European Robin. The red breast makes them unmistakable, even for beginners.
Another good one to look out for is the Blue Tit. These small birds will flock to garden feeders, and their bright feathers mean identifying them is simple. They have bold blue caps, white cheek feathers and yellow breasts.
Classic birds to spot near water
When you are ready to venture beyond your garden, it is a good idea to begin by looking for waterfowl. This is because they are bigger than standard birds, so spotting and identifying them is easier.
Start by watching out for Mallards, which are commonly found in lakes and ponds. They have brown feathers on their bodies and iridescent blue or purple wings; however, male Mallards also have highly distinctive green feathers on their heads, as well as white collar feathers.
This should give you a good head start on your birding journey.
