A guide to cleaning your bird bath

Alongside bird feeders, the essential item you need if you want to attract feathered friends to your garden is a bird bath. This will offer them a vital source of water – as long as you keep it clean. In this blog, we will provide a guide to keeping your bird bath looking like new.

How frequently should a bird bath be cleaned?

It will be a good idea to clean out the bird bath once a week. In the summer, birds will be using it a lot, so the water must be kept fresh for them. During autumn and winter, it can get clogged up with leaves and affected by bad weather.

How should it be cleaned?

If you use the correct tools for the job, cleaning a bird bath should be easy. You need running water, a scrubbing brush, white vinegar and some rubber gloves.

Start by making sure any debris and stagnant water is removed from the bath. Then, make up your cleaning solution, which should be nine parts water to one part white vinegar. Mix the two elements together thoroughly.

After that, you can put on the gloves and start scrubbing with the brush. You can get brushes that are specifically for bird baths, but a standard brush or scouring pad will do just as well. Make sure all areas of it are completely clean and then rinse it with water until there is no foam. Finally, give it time to dry before putting it back out.

Follow this guide to ensure the bath is safe for birds to use.
