Nothing makes it feel like the festive season quite like hearing the first Christmas songs of the year.
Many are so ingrained within our collective memory that we associate them with the festivities as much as Christmas lights. In this blog, we will look at the most popular tunes produced by British artists.
The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl – Fairytale of New York
This may be pushing that definition a bit – as the Pogues were defiantly Irish. Their special guest for this song was Brit Kirsty MacColl though, so we are counting it. Fairytale of New York is a song that has taken on legendary status, despite missing out on the Christmas number one spot when it was released in 1987. Its mix of cynicism and sentiment helps it to stand out.
Wham – Last Christmas
This is another one that has grown in stature and assumed the status of a UK festive classic. A tale of festive love lost, something about it seems to resonate with people. Possibly, its popularity lies in the recognition that Christmas has a melancholy side to it too.
Slade – Merry Xmas Everybody
Merry Xmas Everybody has been an inescapable part of the season in Britain since 1973. Its lyrics remind us of spending time with the family, but also worrying if we can afford all of the Christmas decorations, food and gifts needed. Slade originally released it during tough economic times, and a lot of people will relate to it again in 2026.
Will you be putting any of these songs on the stereo this Christmas?
