Safety tips for cooking outdoors

Spring signals the start of the al fresco dining season, so now is the perfect time to make sure that your outdoor cooking space is well organised, safe and easy to use.

Solid and wobble free

If you have a free standing BBQ, whether it’s a multi-grill beast or a simple kettle drum, your first priority is stability. No one wants a BBQ that wobbles, so a level, solid base is vital, which is not always easy if you’re on grass or textured paving. If putting down some flat slabs is too disruptive, consider a fireproof BBQ mat designed for use on decking. Any built-in BBQ should be stable, but do check that your grills are properly fixed to avoid nasty surprises. Keep gas cannisters upright, away from heat and always check your feed tubes for signs of wear.

Choose a risk-free location

When deciding where to place your BBQ, make sure you’re well away from trees and shrubs, that there are no overhanging branches, and that sparks or embers can’t reach your seating area. You don’t want the cushions on your lovely new Supremo Barcelona garden furniture, for example, posing an unnecessary risk. Larger BBQ units should have a garden-specific fire extinguisher within easy reach, and all outdoor cooks should keep a bucket of water to hand.

Finally, be aware that residual fat at the bottom of a grill is dangerously flammable, so make sure your grill is clean and clear of burnt-on fat before using. Line trays with aluminium foil to make the cleaning process easier. Prepare well, and you’ll soon be wowing guests with your brilliant BBQ skills.
