Follow this quick and easy plan to create a low-maintenance border which will provide sensational colour all year round. We chose low-growing, evergreen shrubs and plants which will provide fantastic colour throughout the year.
Step 1 – Dig over the area for your new border removing any weeds.
Step 2 – Feed the soil by digging in some rich organic matter such as Chicken Manure Pellets.
Step 3 – Lay out you plants according to the plan checking you are happy with the position.
Changing Seasons Border:
Photinia Pink Marble – Height and Spread: 5m (8′) 2m (6′, 5″)
Skimmia Rubella – Height and spread: 120cm (47″)
Helleborus Cinnamon Snow – Height: 12-15 Inches
Leucothoe Little Flames – Height: 50 cm and width 30 cm
Hebe Blue Star – Height and Spread: 0.4m x 0.4m
Step 4 – For each plant you need to dig a hole, at least twice the size the depth of the root ball of the shrub or perennial that you are planting.
Step 5 – Loosen the base of the hole and mix in a generous amount of compost and bone meal to encourage strong root growth.
Step 6 – Place the root ball into the planting hole, making sure that the top of the roots are level with the top of the border soil.
Fill in around the root ball with more of the compost and bone meal mix. Firm in gently using your feet.
Step 7 – Water well and then mulch over the whole area with a generous layer of chipped bark to help retain moisture.
